About the event
ORA Singers explore Tomás Luis de Victoria's Reqiuem of 1605, widely known as the Spanish composer's
towering achievement and his final ever composition written before his passing in 1611.
Throughout the 1580s, Victoria lived and worked in Madrid, serving as Chaplain to Empress Maria, sister of
King Philip II of Spain. Maria died in 1603, and Victoria was commissioned to write the Requiem for the
funeral in April later that year. Following the ceremony, Victoria made several revisions to the work, before
publishing the Officium Defunctorum in 1605 in dedication to Margaret, Maria's daughter. With these revisions,
